How to Buy Hemp for Processing

Caveat emptor

Our customers often bargain/purchase raw hemp from brokers or directly from cultivators and supply to our facility to extract for them. In the process of purchasing large amounts of hemp, the customer often needs to sample the crop and make a determination as to the quality of the crop. If the wrong determination of quality and potency is made, the customer will have false expectations as to what the yield of a crop will produce. This blog entry will give some guidance and shed some light on the process of scientific purchasing.

When hemp is purchased in quantity, proper testing and sampling is important for both the buyer and the seller. In this helpful tutorial, we discuss some of the pitfalls associated with making purchases of crops that are of high value and are also highly variable. The “chalk talk” is an introductory overview on the following subjects:

  • Sampling of hemp for analysis.
  • The problem of sampling bias and how it can affect the purchase price.
  • Some of the pitfalls and solutions for sampling of containers.

Here is the talk:

Ultimately, the best way to avoid surprises and disappointments when making a purchase is to avoid the “purchase by percentage point” offering because the sampling process is fraught with sampling bias. If you must purchase by percentage point, then it is important that you do the following:

  1.  Follow a qualified sampling protocol.
  2. Set your confidence level.
  3. Calculate the number of samples required.
  4. Obtain an unbiased party to sample.
  5. Make sure you core.
  6. Pay for analysis of the samples.
  7. Plot the data.
  8. Perform statistical analysis, obtain the distribution profile.
  9. With knowledge of the variance at your desired confidence level, you will be in a good position to know what the mean and variance potency is for your large purchase.
  10. Build protections into your purchase contract.
